A HILTON FOR FUMBA

Canopy by Hilton, a new boutique hotel by the American hospitality icon, is coming to Fumba Town. It will be the first international hotel on the Fumba peninsula. The brand’s vibe: “positively local”.

“We will bring the story of the neighbourhood into the hotel”, said Sam Diab, Hilton development director, in Fumba when unveiling plans for the first Canopy by Hilton in Zanzibar. Canopy is still a young brand, a more casual lifestyle version of the mothership Hilton – and yet it will be upmarket, appealing to the 173-million-member guest loyalty program Hilton Honors.

Local and high-end

“Canopy is the best fitting hotel for us”, said Sebastian Dietzold, CEO of developer CPS, when signing the agreement with the hotel last December in Fumba. Zanzibari lifestyle, bespoke cooking and traditional aspects will be incorporated in Canopy, Diab said.  “Locally inspired high-end stays” are the motto of the new brand.

The line already runs 40 properties, including in Paris, London, Toronto and Dubai;  Canopy’s in Seychelles and Tangier are expected to open before 2026. “Canopy Zanzibar will be a unique seafront destination and mark Hilton’s re-entry into Tanzania”, said Sam Diab. The hotel with 180 rooms will be situated in the planned timber skyscraper, The Burj Zanzibar.

60 years ago, the first Africa Hilton opened in Cairo. The Doubletree Hilton in Stone Town closed recently; in Nungwi the chain is still successfully operating.

Finally, where does the name canopy come from? “Every bed is topped with a canopy inspired by the neighbourhood”, explained director Sam Diab. Is that a hint at a kanga plaid?
