Movie time in Mbweni

Attention, movie fans! In the unusual but charming surroundings of Mbweni Ruins the Arthouse movie club has found a new home, presenting film classics and new releases every Wednesday.

The shows take place in a well-kept outdoor section of the ruins with no more ceiling but within beautiful historic walls. Comfortable lounges and chairs almost convey a homely feeling yet with a much larger screen and like-minded company. ”You can’t beat a night under the stars watching a great movie”, said Faye Richardson, who together with Staffan Lund and others initiated the Arthouse cinema club way back in 2014 at Rumaisa Hotel in Malindi.

The 150-year old venue in a former girls’ school and the technical set-up is provided by the new owners of Mbweni Ruins, complete with wine, snacks and popcorn. In case of rain the movie is set up in the apartment complex next door, so movies will always be shown on Wednesday nights. “We are looking for film enthusiasts to work with us to get diversity and build consensus toward the best program”, Richardson expressed. No worries about mozzies, mosquito repellent is provided if you don’t bring one!
