Street Art Explosion

Watch street art live in the making from 3-17 February, 2025 in Fumba Town, workshops for kids included.

Eight public spaces and two private houses are being converted into colourful objects during a very first ‘Street Art Festival’ in Fumba Town in Zanzibar. During the Busara weekend (14-17 Feb) visitors can watch artists painting live.

Out of 160 African applicants, ten were chosen to publicly paint walls, playgrounds and even the entrance gate of the formerly strictly white-walled community.

The two-week street art festival is organised by two female mural artists, Victoria Firth from England and Laura Sierzputowski from France of “The Wild Murals Project”. Both have worked extensively in Brazil and Africa. Firth will be on site with an all-female crew to create her own mural. Kids workshops are held each day with school groups coming in. An exhibition of street art takes place on the Pavilion rooftop.

The mural artists from several East African countries had to submit sketches of their planned art beforehand – so that “no unwanted surprises would happen”, said Tobias Dietzold of developer CPS, who initiated the festival.

Each artist was paired with a wildlife or nature organisation; the festival has the motto “Conservation through Art”.
