Tradition with a twist
The art of bathing: new Hammam in Zanzibar
The hamam tradition, first practiced in Zanzibar in the late 1800’s, is coming alive again with a brand-new steam bath and massage parlour in the heart of Stone Town. Traditionally furnished, the Zanzibar Hammam is located on Cathedral Street near St. Joseph’s Cathedral. It’s the brainchild of well-known photographer and publisher Javed Jafferji. With the new Hammam he continues a time-honoured royal tradition established by Sultan Bargash, one of the former rulers of Zanzibar. The original Hamamni Baths in Stone Town are only a stone-throw away from the new Hammam. In the palace ruins of Mtoni, north of Zanzibar city, the relics of more traditional steam baths and water basins can be found. The tradition of hammams in Zanzibar reflects a rich cultural heritage with many influences. Zanzibar came under the control of the Sultanate of Oman in the 17th century. With the arrival of Indian traders and immigrants, Zanzibar’s cultural fabric turned even more diverse.
The new Zanzibar Hammam offers bathing rituals with steam baths called Detox Hammam Retreats, body scrubs, mani/pedi and massage – an ideal relaxation especially after a tiresome Stone Town tour.
