ART “Total freedom”

A rising Nigerian artist explores female experience and self-empowerment in her art available at Forster Gallery.

About her arrival in Zanzibar, the artist said: “The moment I stepped out of the plane and felt the warm breeze, it was complete freedom.” Yakno Abasi Ene recently held a sales vernissage at Forster Gallery in Mbweni, where she spent six weeks in residence. The 30-year-old Nigerian, a textile design graduate, has already exhibited in the US.

Flamboyantly depicting women in various tropical surroundings, her technique combines two and three-dimensional body paintings, rendering a roughness to otherwise perfect shapes. “I use white pearl colliers as a symbol of femininity as it is thrown at women, but at the same time these pearls are lending aesthetics to the picture”, she interprets her own elegant work. “I want to make women of Africa more visible and empower them”, the Nigerian artist said.
